Douglas Quayside Isle of Man – could do better!
April 16, 2007The sun is shining, the weather is great on the Isle of Man, what better place to go, chill out and relax, have a drink and a meal down at Douglas Quayside right – wrong! Whoever planned and spent the Isle of Man tax payers money for this half cocked job should be fired!
Once again the people of the Isle of Man have not been given value for money. The Douglas quayside has once again been given preference to the motor car! Why can so many other places you visit in the UK or Europe get it right and the Isle of Man so wrong.
The Douglas Borough Council website claims that the area ‘aims to create a high quality pedestrian environment along the quay so that it becomes a more pleasant place to walk, meet and enjoy the many pubs and restaurants’ what a laugh, there are no areas for the public, apart from a pavement that is slightly wider than the previous one!
The area should be 100% pedestrianised, that would allow business, pubs and restaurants to provide proper seating areas. Instead people sit on and off the pavement with passing cars right before their eyes! With proper thought nad planning (something very lacking in government and councils on the Isle of Man) all deliveries could be made down the quayside in the morning, and in the afternoon nad evenings tables, chairs, patio heaters could be laid out giving residents, families and children a safe and relaxing environment which would surely have envouraged more trade and given the business’s situated along the quayside the freedom to flourish! Excuse the pun, branding, er concept….. or whatever it is!
Could do better!
