Tesco’s – you patronising t**ts!

June 20, 2007

I went to Tesco this evening to grab a few bits and pieces that I needed. It wasn’t a weekly big shop, just one of those top up shops you need for fresh stuff like milk and vegetables.I don’t like supermarkets at the best of times but hey our choice is limited these days especially on the Isle of Man due to the sheer power and influence they have over farmers and suppliers. I do where possible try and buy from local butchers and suppliers, but without making excuses it isnt always possible! After rushing around the store I filled my trolley (you always do) and headed for the checkout where the very pleasant check out girl asked if I had a club card, scanned my items and totalled up the bill. As this was an uncalled for shop I wasnt organised and so had to use the plastic bags that are always supplied at the end of the checkout. What really wound me up was the fact that when some bananas I purchased (wrapped in plastic I might add) didn’t have a barcode on them, the supervisor headed off to find the price and during this time the checkout girl said, and I quote, ‘ you do realise you can get double your points if you brought in your own plastic bags and didnt use the ones provided.I said, ‘yes I realise that’ fuming inside! Not at the checkout out girl, just at the people who run Tesco!I am sorry Tesco, but do not fuckin patronise me and make out that its me that ruining the planet and not you! Your the twats that wrap everything up in packaging totally unnecessarily and then fly it all over the fucking planet before it lands back in the store two miles from where it originated! How Tesco have the cheek to tell me its double points for recycled plastic bags is beyond words! Dont tell me to try and change my habits when you should be changing yours. So pull your finger out and do something with meaning and not some shitty double points promotion to try and makes us as consumers feel guilty about the environment! And dont give that bullshit about ‘every little helps!’ Do something major!

  1. FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!

Its hard enough to work here all day long without customers giving us grief for offering a service that most customers prefer. Hang on a min we are offering u extra clubcard points its not as if we have a gun to ur head when u pick up a bag is it?????. Do you realise how busy this shop gets?? Not only do we offer green points we offer a bag drop off point and we will reuse or recycle the bags that you use.

Rather than complaining that a customer assistant offered you help and advice how about taking time out to think about how pissed off that member of staff must get asking the same bloody question to every other ungrateful customer who comes by her checkout day in day out!!!

Tesco support the manx community and we do infact stock a very large selection of manx products in the store. So give us a break!!!

  2. Perhaps, for a second, you think that we are told to promote such a scheme, and that the girl, who sounds like an excellent customer assistant was trying to be helpful.
So, why don’t you get off your high horse and think about how much the lovely CA didn’t want to serve you, you arrogant sod.

  3. oh my fuckin god

tesco is a terible place to shop and an even worse place to work, the managers dont seem to give a crap about their staff and the customers make it even worse, yes of course the staff are patronising they work at tesco! what do you expect.

    tesco shit, me good.

  4. I work at a Tesco express and and its Twats like you complaing about the staff who are just doing their job that makes our working day even more diffucult!
we HAVE TO ASK IF YOU WILL BE REUSING A CARRIER BAG & INFORM YOU THAT YOU GET AN EXTRA POINT FOR DOING SO
We HAVE TO say Hello to every single customer and Smile even tho we mostly do not get a Hello back
We HAVE to say Goodbye and we HAVE to ask for a Club card..imagine having to say all this to every single customer every single day!
    So Mr Twat…just shop elsewhere..please!

  5. I see your point about Tesco actually taking responsibility for their packaging but as long as it suits their pockets they’re not going to are they? I suggest we adopt the same methods as shoppers in Germany, where all extraneous packaging is left at the checkout. If we all did that supermarkets might stop over-packaging everything.

  6. Its great to see how everyone is so passionate abut this subject, good or bad I like to receive the feedback.

    Thanks everyone

  7. i worked at tesco for 3years and it has depresses me terribly and it is such a greed driven place based on lies with no health and safety other than verbal promises

  8. I also worked at TESCO for 10 years and seen many changes. It was a nice place to work and bearable. Then 4 years before quitting, things at a moderate pace began to spiral downwards. It began on cutbacks on staff. Putting more pressure on excising staff and managers. Stock levels increased in the warehouse putting more strain on the excisting staff and managers. Staff atitudes worsened toward managers who were loading more of there job discription onto them, plus that member of staff had there own job to do as well. Staff felt imtimidated by thair Section Managers and felt scared to speak out. Staff then began to back stab each other more and more. This affected the customers who shop in TESCO. As things worsened, more customers became aggressive toward the General Assistants who were only trying to please the customers. The management often refused to come to the shop floor and resolved the needs of the customers. The relationsip with GA’a and Managers drifted further and further apart. The Management took out there frustrated ego on the staff and the customers did the same when the management were not around. Staff really had nowhere to turn too for some help, apart from the Human Resourse. Human resourse staff were also stretched and we had one woman who covered 6 stores in a large area, off course she was not around to sort out your problems at the time. Things worsened still when mass migrants entered the UK. There languages were impossible for us to understand making our jobs harder still, resourses were criticle then before the influx of mass migration. Then mangers took on those people regardless if they could do the job or not as they had an equal opportunties policy to fill. Something of interest in a court of law relating to staff disclipine. Staff often have to go though painful wecome back meetings after they had time off ill. The managemant of TESCO were not sympathetic and used there ego to make the member of staff feel very guilty for having a unavoidable illness. The investigation meeting would go like this, a manager would ask questions, a manager to take down the questions and answers from the staff, plus a Union Representitive, if need be. There used to be a virdict, sometimes it was a verbal or written warning. So customers, if you feel the need to attack the staff who work for TESCO, please appriciate the situation and see the angle I am coming from. We endure unruly health and safety, value wages, mean benefits and lack of counciling communication. If you hate TESCO like I do, then shop somewhere else!

  9. Great comment Mark. I am not really aiming my comment at the checkout staff or those at the coal face, but more at the senior decision makers of the company. Thanks for your feedback.
