Viking longship, Peel Bay, Isle of Man

The Kaupthing collapse has been making the local news and tv stations again today. The thing is all for the wrong reasons.

Last week it looked like there was some possible avenues that could lead to a positive result for all those saver who lost out. Now it seams that the Isle of Man is the rock between a hard place.

The Labour government hasn’t been been quiet coming forward in saying over the years that it isn’t mad keen on offshore tax havens and you kind of get the feeling that it could well use this credit crunch casualty to be it’s way of squeezing the drop out of last Isle of Man Offshore banking Tax Haven status.

After all the Isle of Man has said it can go on without the help of the UK historically and after all why politically should the UK Governent assist customers who have lost there savings when they don’t really agree with the IOM Tax haven status.

Not very good times.

The Isle of Man government needs to take drastic quick action to find the right resolution.

After last nights public meeting about the collapse of the Isle of Man based Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander Bank the news coming out of the local newspapers is more positive today as reported by iomonline.

My thoughts are with everyone who has lost money and I only hope that the Isle of Man, UK and Icelandic Governments can come to some sort or financial arrangement to assist in compensating all those who have lost their money!

Tough times ahead.

Manannan's cloak

Following on from my previous post it now seems that the Isle of Man Depositor’s Compensation Scheme has been revised.

It all seems a bit late in the day when you consider that Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander International has collapsed today and is now in the hands of the liquidators!!! I really feel it for everyone who had savings with the bank it must be absolutley gutting. A recent report by Isle of Man online has posts from concerned cusotmers and also those that have lost money it doesn’t make pleasant reading! A mist has desended on the island!

At this stage I feel that the Isle of Man government reacted to late and this has now left the Isle of Man as International Finance jurisdiction in a very vulnerable place at a time when the media are feeding on the global panic. As the story plays out I am sure to post again.

The credit crunch and the current economic outlook has meant it has been a very unsettling time for savers all around the world and in the offshore jurisdictions including the Isle of Man. The recent bailout by the UK Goverment of Bradford & Bingley as well as continued rescue plans by European governments has begged the million dollar question by savers, ‘is my money safe?’ (more…)

I met up with @Owen and @jamesq today for lunch at the Velvet Lobster on the Quay in Douglas on the sunny Isle of Man. The Velvet Lobster is a really cool place serving nice lunctime snacks and drinks. The staff were very friendly and polite and overall the service and food was really good and made a pleasant change to the normal lunchtime eateries in Douglas. I had a Cappacino as I was struggling today but @Owen and @jamesq went for the Coffee Banoffee shake which I must admit looked fantastic!

I think this might be a regular thing we have started!
